SPARK Reading Club ignites interest for special-needs kids
SPARK Reading Club ignites interest for special-needs kids is a newspaper article available to read online at NorthJersey.com.
It is about Denville Public Library's kick off party for its summer reading program.
The Talking Book & Braille Center helped make this happen by working with the Children's Librarian, Richard Bryce, and providing information and materials including tactile sheets and Braille books.
From the article: "Recapping the event, Bryce said, "A reading class/puppet show was conducted with the Braille version of ‘There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,’ by Sims Taback, where the kids had the chance to put the animals into the old lady doll designed for use with the story. There was also a touch box which gave the kids the opportunity to guess/feel things of different textures that related to our theme of Make a Splash, Read. A ring toss game was provided, as well as face painting. A professional clown named Shorty, aka Harriet Kelem, decorated the arms and faces of many of the children that night. Materials from the Library for the Blind and Handicapped were made available to parents and their children both to look at and take home, and they provided the Braille book as well."
TBBC is happy to help any school or public library who is putting on a similar event, either by providing materials or by visiting! Contact us at tbbcyouth@njstatelib.org
